Womens self defence classes commence on November 1st

Good morning Auckland,

Another month has flown by at Bucklands Beach BJJ & MMA. As always, our doors are open to those who are looking to learn and challenge themselves. If you want to get in shape for the summer season, or pick up some awesome self-defence skills, we would love to meet you.

Some junior member success stories.

This month, Ryan, one of our junior competitors, won the regional no-gi championship at the ASB stadium. The event was NOT to be missed and we couldn’t be prouder, all his fights ended by way of submission. One of our youngest members, Tyler, also jumped in on a few days-notice but fell short against the first competitors he’s ever faced. They’re both looking forward to their next competitions.

An announcement for women living in Auckland!

A few weeks ago, we asked for feedback regarding the formation of women’s only Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and self-defence classes. The interest was phenomenal and in return, we’ve given the green light for a trial pilot course. The first class will be next Wednesday at 7:30 P.M. – 8:30 P.M. (1st November) … This class will be COMPLETELY FREE for the first week! We urge everyone to spread the word and bring their friends along, we’re confident this will be an exciting course for all involved.

What should you expect?

Taught by Andy Medcalf, a professional martial arts coach and BJJ Brown Belt, you will be taken through the foundations of striking and grappling, with an emphasis on fitness training and easy-to-learn self-defence skills. All our students will be treated with respect and will be given individual attention if they get stuck on anything, we always encourage questions!

What makes our class ideal for women looking to try something new?

The syllabus you will follow is focused around the art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Students will learn how to take an aggressor to the floor, where their size advantage will become obsolete against certain techniques which require movement and skill rather than strength. You will learn a range of proven submissions such as the rear-naked choke, the armbar and the triangle choke, all designed to quickly and safely end a fight. You will also learn various stand up techniques with a focus on ‘managing distance’ and using wits to avoid harm.

What do we expect from you?

Students should expect to sweat in our classes! Make sure to bring water because you will definitely burn several hundred calories. Please note that you are not expected to have any previous experience as we will be starting from the basics! For the fastest results, we encourage you to come to every class, however our approach is relaxed and that’s how our students should be at all times. You can take a break at any point and we always stretch out to avoid injuries… You will be welcomed, and you shouldn’t feel intimidated on the mats.

Dear residents of Auckland,

Due to popular demand, Bucklands Beach BJJ & MMA is now running brand new Martial Arts classes aimed at giving children the same level of professional instruction that we are currently offering in our adult classes. More on this to follow, but firstly a quick general update:

We’ve been running for over a month now and time truly has flown by at the club. The mats are getting progressively busier and we are thankful for each and every member of our team. You are all pushing hard and we are witnessing your progression week after week.

Little Warriors – Martial Arts classes for children!

The Little Warriors classes have been tailor made for children between the ages of four and fourteen. At their core, these classes are a mix of games designed specifically to train movement and control, mixed in with basic Brazilian Jiu Jitsu techniques and fitness activities. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu does not involve striking (punching and kicking etc), instead, it relies on leverage. This means that despite a child’s size or strength, when they learn BJJ’s tried and tested movements and holds, that child will be able to better defend themselves should the need arise. These classes will make your child sweat, they are a dynamic full body workout resulting in a visible improvement in strength and cardio. Your child does NOT need any experience or skills to begin! Martial Arts tend to boost confidence; the social aspects can help your child both on AND off the mats. BJJ caters for a variety of people and Bucklands Beach BJJ & MMA provides a safe and clean environment with a reputable coach (and an amazing view!)

However, for a limited time only, your child can train for FREE for THREE months if the parent or guardian is a club member attending the adult classes. Our head coach Andy has been fortunate enough to have had all of his kids training alongside him and strongly encourages as many families as possible to do the same. It is the perfect way to bond as a family, learning whilst having fun!

BJJ and MMA in Bucklands Beach Auckland

Good morning Auckland!

My name is Andy Medcalf and I am a highly experienced international BJJ and MMA coach. I am here today to offer you classes in a growing academy where I’ve started teaching. This is the first blog post on my recently built website, I am going to start using this area to connect with the local community who I want to help-out and teach.

Are you looking to lose weight?

BJJ and MMA are both dynamic work outs which can burn around 750 calories in an hour. If you’re willing to sweat, they will build your core muscles, giving you functional strength, whilst removing any excess weight you have. I had a student who was weighing 106kg when he entered… In less than a year, he’s down to around 80kg (lean muscle) and his fitness level is unparalleled.

Do you want to know how to defend yourself?

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is the perfect martial art if you are facing a larger or more athletic opponent. It was designed for this purpose and it involves taking the fight to the floor where you can leverage position to beat natural strength. If you don’t believe me, then feel free to come down and watch my 15-year-old son sparring against the rest of us! Mixed Martial Arts speaks for itself, it requires years to master but I promise you will become a versatile fighter, you will be able to protect yourself (or a loved one!) from many different situations.

Can you teach me privately?

I offer private lessons in BJJ and MMA which allow you to learn at an exponentially faster rate. I can come up with a training plan and I can educate you on how best to leverage your situation. I have taught people from all walks of life and fitness levels. For example, I’ve had middle aged smokers become some of my strongest students, I’ve prepared some younger guys for really tough UK national competitions and ultimately, I believe that one size does not fit all when it comes to coaching.

What are your credentials as a coach?

I am highly qualified to teach! From being a professional Gracie Barra instructor for over five years, an ex-semi-professional cage fighter and in holding a BJJ Brown Belt which took ten years of dedication to earn. I received my Brown Belt from 2x and current World Champion, Rapheal Dos Santos. I have trained with the best, including ‘Spider’ Anderson Silva, Andre Galvao, Lucio ‘Lagarto’ Rodrigues, Fernando Terre, Henry Akins and Braulio Estima Black Belt Luke Costello. I have practiced alongside UFC fighter Mark Godbeer and fought against Bradley Scott, also in the UFC.

How do I get started?
