April Announcements Bucklands Beach BJJ & MMA

Happy April Auckland!

After another crazy month and the No Gi National competition, we thought this would be a great time to update you on what’s been happening!

Earlier in March we had our charity fundraiser for ‘Variety’, raising money and awareness for underprivileged kiwi kids. With members from several clubs dropping by on the day and paying a small fee to participate, Bucklands Beach BJJ & MMA and the surrounding teams raised just short of $500. Admittedly, we did aim to go higher than this figure however it was an improvement on our last event and it’s something that we’ll continue again soon, we really believe in the cause 🙂 Special mention to Ryan and Malcom who both managed to roll for the full SIX hours.

Happy team members of Bucklands Beach BJJ & MMA

Expanding our children’s curriculum!

With the rapid development and subsequent expansion of the ‘Little Warriors’, we are happy to announce that we are opening a new class on Wednesdays from the 18th April 2018! Get in touch if you’d like your child to be part of the team! If you have any questions about the Little Warriors classes, we wrote a piece on them with quite a lot of info previously so you can check that one out!

Bucklands Beach BJJ & MMA turned up for the New Zealand National No Gi Championships!

The Little Warriors, along with the adult team, jumped in and gave the National No Gi Championships their best efforts over the weekend. We had a bag of wins, losses and spectacular moments of determination. I can honestly say that the students went in with positivity, gave it their all and achieved a lot after only training for around eight months with the club. Maisie (in the youngest division of the day), had one match which was probably the nicest grappling fight we’ve ever seen… She won gold with the first take down of the match. Some mixed results from the rest of the Little Warriors squad with some being eliminated first round, whereas some others narrowly lost in the final on points. A massive congratulations to all having the courage to get in and have a go in undoubtedly one of the biggest competitions of the year!

A New National Champion!

The adults competing also achieved mixed results – We did see great performances across the board and it’s surprising what you can do when your put under competition pressure. A special mention to Ryan, who won all of his matches in the Juvenile Advanced Division by submission. You can watch some of these fights on Facebook!

Ryan faced the nine time No Gi national champion in the final and submitted him with a sweet guillotine choke to become the No Gi Regional and now National Champion! He then went on into the adult intermediate division and had a great comeback to secure a last minute kimura sub. Unfortunately Ryan came just short and lost to the adult division victor, nevertheless an astounding effort at just sixteen years of age!

With only a month to go, the team now have their sights on the Regional Gi competition coming up May 12th! Train hard, stay positive and let’s do this.

Competition BJJ success Auckland

Until next month! Keep rolling – Andy

BJJ and MMA in Bucklands Beach Auckland

Good morning Auckland!

My name is Andy Medcalf and I am a highly experienced international BJJ and MMA coach. I am here today to offer you classes in a growing academy where I’ve started teaching. This is the first blog post on my recently built website, I am going to start using this area to connect with the local community who I want to help-out and teach.

1) If you want to visit the homepage of my website, click here.

2) If you want to keep reading, here’s some general answers to any questions you may have.

Are you looking to lose weight?

BJJ and MMA are both dynamic work outs which can burn around 750 calories in an hour. If you’re willing to sweat, they will build your core muscles, giving you functional strength, whilst removing any excess weight you have. I had a student who was weighing 106kg when he entered… In less than a year, he’s down to around 80kg (lean muscle) and his fitness level is unparalleled.

Do you want to know how to defend yourself?

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is the perfect martial art if you are facing a larger or more athletic opponent. It was designed for this purpose and it involves taking the fight to the floor where you can leverage position to beat natural strength. If you don’t believe me, then feel free to come down and watch my 15-year-old son sparring against the rest of us! Mixed Martial Arts speaks for itself, it requires years to master but I promise you will become a versatile fighter, you will be able to protect yourself (or a loved one!) from many different situations.

Can you teach me privately?

I offer private lessons in BJJ and MMA which allow you to learn at an exponentially faster rate. I can come up with a training plan and I can educate you on how best to leverage your situation. I have taught people from all walks of life and fitness levels. For example, I’ve had middle aged smokers become some of my strongest students, I’ve prepared some younger guys for really tough UK national competitions and ultimately, I believe that one size does not fit all when it comes to coaching.

What are your credentials as a coach?

I am highly qualified to teach! From being a professional Gracie Barra instructor for over five years, an ex-semi-professional cage fighter and in holding a BJJ Brown Belt which took ten years of dedication to earn. I received my Brown Belt from 2x and current World Champion, Rapheal Dos Santos. I have trained with the best, including ‘Spider’ Anderson Silva, Andre Galvao, Lucio ‘Lagarto’ Rodrigues, Fernando Terre, Henry Akins and Braulio Estima Black Belt Luke Costello. I have practiced alongside UFC fighter Mark Godbeer and fought against Bradley Scott, also in the UFC.

How do I get started?

All you need to get started is a pair of shorts, a t-shirt, a big water bottle and a mouth guard. Follow this link to the contact page of my website and get in touch with me. I’m happy to talk to you via email, or via a phone call. I’m a friendly guy and you shouldn’t feel nervous to get in touch. We can take the rest from there.

Thanks for reading and see you on the mats!

– Andy

Our doors are now open for you, are you ready to train?
